WHITE:

“Unoaked” Chardonnay- Lot 1

100% McLaren Vale premium fruit from rootstock that is over 100 years old! This is the perfect expression of the unoaked Chardonnay style – very much akin to classic Chablis. This wine shows depth, length of flavor, freshness and class. The acidity balances the fruit and makes it a classic food wine. It goes down easily, yet is also complex. So it is easy to see why this is the best example (and value) of unoaked Aussie Chardonnay available!

“Barrel Fermented” Reserve Chardonnay - Lot 2

100% McLaren Vale premium fruit from rootstock that is over 100 years old! This Chardonnay is a bit richer with a creamy, satisfying depth of flavor. The oak manages to be deft, not overbearing, making it softer, rounder and fuller, while magically retaining a very nice lightness of touch. It is unusually classy for a barrel-fermented Aussie Chardonnay, akin to an excellent Pouilly-Fuisse

The winery says 2005 "is sure to be ranked as one of the best Riesling vintages on record" - and they've been making it (to great acclaim) since the 1950s! They describe it as "rich, minerally, crisp and zesty with a good structure, depth and length" and "sweet and floral aromas of nectarine, white currant, citrus blossom and lime zest, complemented with hints of gooseberry and white peach." Like all of the best Australian dry Rieslings, it's one of the world's most versatile wines with food - yet is also quite satisfying (and endlessly faceted) on its own.

RED:

Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Dark, richly-textured and especially lush! No problem pouring this Cab down your gullet – as you do, you’ll explore new realms of sheer class as you enjoy the thickness, complexity and polish of a truly remarkable Rutherford Cab.

Pinot Noir

A simply outstanding Pinot Noir! It hails from one of the most beautiful vineyards anywhere - at the top of a gently rolling hillside, 2,000 feet up, in the Lenswood section of Australia's cool Adelaide Hills. It is immaculately tended and farmed. Every thing about this wine screams Burgundy, both in inspiration and scale.

Very complex and beguiling, it reveals itself slowly and fascinatingly, as true pinot noir does. It is made from nine carefully selected pinot noir clones, including several brought in from Burgundy. As the winemaker says: "Running this vineyard cannot be done from a textbook - certainly not an American or Australian one."

James Halliday says "There is no doubt that the Adelaide Hills is and will remain South Australia's leading producer of pinot noir" - and single this wine out as one of its three finest examples.

The winemaker describes her 2004 (accurately and well, I think) like this: "Crimson ruby in color. Sweet lifted fragrant, spicy aromas of strawberries, wild cherries and a hint of herbs, with creamy nuances. The palate is richly flavored with cherry and raspberry fruits, good texture and balance, velvety tannins and good length."

We’ll add that it is made from pure, juicy, attractive pinot noir fruit with a degree of aromatic complexity and even terroir character you’ll only ever find in much pricier pinot noirs.

As you might expect of a Reserve-level offering, it's much darker, richer, deeper and more powerful than the regular Turner & Cole. And that says a lot, considering the grace, elegance, complexity and class of the "regular" Turner & Cole is utterly compelling. This pinot noir comes from one of Australia's leading pinot noir specialists - and one of James Halliday's very few 5-star pinot noir producers. A legitimate "Reserve" style, and almost luxuriant in its silky, mouth-filling texture. The production was only half that of the regular Turner & Cole.
