Some names on a bottle (i.e. Raveneau in Chablis) almost always guarantee an excellent wine. In the Sancerre hamlet of Bue, that name is Crochet. Bue makes the most chalky, elegant and refined – so for us the most archetypal – Sancerres. And for quite some time, the shining beacon of quality in Bue has been Lucien Crochet’s “Le Chene”. Crochet’s brilliant “Le Chene” is simply the most intense and ethereal (and great) we’ve tasted. But the hot new producer in Bue is Daniel Crochet. (How hot? We bought the last of his 2003 vintage, and are eagerly awaiting the 2004 and 2005!) His style is a bit fuller, though perhaps a bit less rarefied than Lucien’s. And the prices – at least for now – are remarkably low for a wine so good, and so sought after.
A superb Sancerre, and a truly incredible bargain. I think I’ve found my new house white. Everything a Sancerre should be.
Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar- Bright straw. Brisk lemon, pink grapefruit and talc aromas complemented by honeysuckle and jasmine. Bright, tangy citrus and green apple flavors pick up softer tangerine and poached pear qualities with air. Juicy and fleshy on the finish, which features a note of licorice.
